left hand, right hand . . . brake!
Adventures in Ziplining
how to zipline like a pro, you ask? simple. put your life, your limbs, your trembling into the hands of two very capable, young ladies who don't provide any downtown for fear maturation. then step up, take a deep breath, say to yourself, "holy sh**" (plus left hand, right hand, brake), sit down and let go. you'll hear kayla say (each time), "have fun" as the platform becomes nothing but a distant memory and the one before you appears barely sturdy enough for one, much less eight. then, sandra grabs for the harness, hauls you to the tree (or pole), and you realize you've made it through one more course. life is good, that is, until you see the next leg (each being more extreme than the previous). but then the drill kicks in and when you final reach the final course (of eight) - a dual racing extravaganza, you realize its time to add radical punctuation to this bucket list experience. it's a "what the heck" moment. do it, and just for sh***s and giggles, outrace your opponent. i can't say i won, but i did finish the course. sandra told me upon my first landing following the teaching course, "i saw fear written all over your face." yes, my dear travelers, fear can spell, and my face was its canvas. i zipped through eight courses with 'words' splattered all over my face.
my trepidation was real, and my success, undeniable. i might not have glided with the grace or confidence of kids half my age or even the 75-year-old in front of me, but success was the outcome.
