when you remember the civil war, you remember the blood shed, the heart ache and the turmoil that families endured for what seemed like an eternity. we forget that when most men went off to war, they only expected it to last a few months; they took their finest garments along with silver and metal. a year later, the finery had lost its sheen, and the dust had settled along the hills and valleys and make-shift graves. war became a lifestyle, one that brought with it every aspect of the life the men had left. there were spectators along the lines of battle. men and women still fell in love and married. parties were still the perfect excuse to lay arms down, sit around the campfire and imagine normalcy once more.
