411 main street, north little rock, arkansas www.starvingartistcafe.net ![]() sponsored by the argenta arts foundation, tales from the south continues the oral tradition of storytelling at its finest. this unique radio show can be heard on thursdays at 7 p.m. CT on FM89.1 and Sundays on the world radio network. if you're lucky enough to be in north little rock on any tuesday, you can be a part of the live audience at the starving artist cafe. doors open at 5 p.m. for dinner and the show starts at 7 p.m. during my recent visit, storytellers alan eastham, tyler thompson and john wells transported listeners from the streets of france and the veil behind the iron curtain to the misfortunes of the ski slopes. three narrators shared experiences and emotions that united the listeners in moments of applause and laughter. it started as a one-time show seven years ago and today, it airs in europe, asia, africa, making it available to over 130 million listeners worldwide. it can also be heard on public radio stations throughout the county. click here to listen to shows on the local little rock radio station. the goal is "to share these incredible and entertaining stories on multiple public radio stations. donation are encouraged and accepted and are tax-deductible. visit the website at www.talesfromthesouth.com. not only are the tales catchy, but the location at the starving artists cafe joins in as a character in its own story. the walls and shelves are filled with work of local artists. from paintings to poetry, works can be viewed during dinner and purchased on the way out. sometimes, an artist trumps the dinner as he paints, draws, or sketches during the lunch or dinner hours. it's eclectic ambiance feeds the soul and the sight. a list of artists and works can be found at www.starvingartistcafe.net. they also seek submissions. if you are a southerner, you definitely have a story to tell. guidelines are available on the website. the evening's music was provided by the salty dogs. |
